Title Description:
Two Locations is the seventh solo full length CD by American composer and sound artist Richard Chartier. The two "locations" on the CD are reworkings of two sound installations exhibited in US art galleries during the past year: "untitled_location" at the Contemporary Museum [ Baltimore, MD ] and "3_components" at Fusebox Gallery [ Washington, DC ].
While Chartier is known for his quiet and subtle works incorporating silence and implied silence, this pair of compositions presents quite audible and apparent constantly shifting sounds. These pieces contain no points of silence. "Location" especially presents a departure for Chartier. During the process of creating these works he moved from outside of Washington, DC to Baltimore, MD. This shift in location can be felt between the two pieces.
Richard Chartier (b.1971) has produced critically acclaimed recordings for labels including Trente Oiseaux (Germany), LINE (USA), Meme (Japan), and Fallt (Ireland), as well collaborative works with Nosei Sakata (*0),Taylor Deupree, and Kim Cascone on 12k (USA). For his cd Series, Chartier was awarded one of twelve Honorable Mentions in the category of Digital Music by the prestigious Prix Ars Electronica, 2001 (Linz, Austria). This work was also featured in the Whitney Biennial 2002 exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY). His work has been featured on a number of international compilations including the comprehensive Clicks & Cuts 2 compact disc set (Mille Plateaux, Germany). His work explores the relationship between sound, silence, focus, and the act of listening.
Both his visual and sound works have been exhibited in many galleries and artspaces in the US including the Art Institute of Chicago, Fusebox (DC), The Contemporary Museum (Baltimore) the Corcoran Gallery of Art (DC), and the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY). Over the past several years, he has been invited to perform his work at music and digital culture events/programs in North America, Europe, and Japan including such noted international electronic music/arts festivals as MUTEK (Montreal), Lovebytes (Sheffield), Transmissions (Chicago), The Leeds International Film Festival (UK) and in conjunction with the sound art exhibit "Frequencies [Hz]" at the Schirn Kunsthalle (Frankfurt).
