Possibly his most ambitious work to date, Joe ColleyÕs Desperate Attempts at Beauty: Conceptual and Research Excercises continues to document JoeÕs relentless exploration into the phenomena of soundÑboth mental and physical, in manipulated states or unaltered states. The title suggests nothing less, nothing more. Joe Colley is a self taught artist investigating the conceptual possibilities of sound through recording and installation.
His performances have been seen as part of festivals including Activating The Medium (SFMOMA), Observatori (Valencia, Spain), Phonotaktik (Vienna, Austria), Beyond Music (Venice, Ca.), Songlines (Mills College, Oakland) and CEAIT (CalArts,
Valencia). For over ten years his recordings have been released internationally on various underground record labels. His recent installations have focused on creating unstable situations to compose sound by chance and remove the artist as much as
possible from this process. The value of these experiments is still to be determined.
