Title Description:
Despite its title, Jackie-O MotherfuckerÕs third widely available release (after a long string of hard-to-find vinyl-only albums) isnÕt a drastic departure for the Portland, Oregon-based collective. Rather, Change, the bandÕs first album for the Textile label after two excellent releases on Road Cone, is more like an evolutionary shift, with the groupÕs development continuing at the same subtle pace it has been all along. Listening to the bandÕs recent work now, the progression through the jagged edges of Fig. 5, to the more languid jams of Liberation, to the folksy sprawl of Change seems as natural as erosion.

The metaphor is certainly appropriate for this particular band, too. Working staunchly outside of any current musical movement, JOMF have carved out their own unique niche on the outskirts of the underground, boldly experimenting and fusing styles into their own mutant form of Americana, not really caring whether or not anyoneÕs listening. The bandÕs aesthetic sense pulls liberally from all corners of American music Ð Alan Lomax-recorded folk and blues songs, free jazz, tape experiments, and modern improvisational techniques -- but blends them together into a sound quite unlike anything else.
