Title Description:
Coming off like a cross between John Fahey and Derek Bailey, German guitarist Steffen Basho-Junghans arrives with this wonder of a solo guitar CD. Presenting solo works on his acoustic guitar, Steffen is proud to announce that no overdubs or effects were used in making this record.
Everything was recorded live with gentle edits. This is really a big shock as the glaring string machinations sound throughout as if they were heavily processed in one way or another. While his picking is quite intense in sections, he doesn't forget about the key element of melody. Too many times, the guitar sounds as it has been specifically detuned, as Steffen runs through his neck like some sort of a wild man. Then, he turns around and changes his style to very contemplative and loopy caresses. It's almost as if he was trying to say ' look at me, I'm a man of many faces. A lot of this work is quite percussive. A perfect sign of a disciplined player is that you'd swear you're hearing a whole one-man ensemble playing behind just one guitar. This is quite intricate and challenging work indeed. 'Unknown Music II' is a step in the right direction, exposing new paths for guitar of today.
