Title Description:
Vital Review:
A bizarre and insidiously compelling electroacoustic stew that keeps
bubbling up pure and processed recordings from the far west of New South
Wales. Subtle rumblings, or maybe the breath of a fire, give way to
snippets of broadcast voices, radio static, and processed plunks, only to
suddenly emerge into an insect chorus or crunching footsteps. To my still
rather naive ears (in the realm of experimental music), this duo bridges
the gap between sonic abstraction and the rootedness of the voice of
place with a rare sense of grace. The result is a disc that speaks to the
body's direct knowledge while giving voice to the inescapable
interference patterns that permeate our days; its feel echoes the fitting
name of this pair's earlier moniker, Machine for Making Sense. At times
recalling the work of Eric La Casa, while veering more deeply into
electro-ambient territory, the central extended piece, West of West, is a
masterwork of deep-immersion soundscape composition. For those with an
ear for the edge, this is one not to be missed.
