Title Description:
CRV has been the solo sound project of Matt Taggart since 2001. Taggart hails from Montana, a northwestern state with--in addition to bleak, harsh winters--a "frontier" reputation of independence and, to a degree, isolation: doing things on your own is how things often get done. This sense permeates Big Sky, PCRV's debut pro-pressed CD. PCRV explores myriad aspects of experimental electronic music, making this disc of interest to those who enjoy complex droneworks, harsh electronic mayhem, and choking electronic sputter. There are numerous things I like about PCRV, but what really piqued my interest was Matt's enthusiasm for exploring all aspects of sound. I first heard PCRV at a show I set up for him in Chicago; it was a solid noise set and he was energetic, enthusiastic, and a friendly guyÜnone of the drama I (unfortunately) usually associate with "noise" artists. He later sent me some rough mixes of recordings he was working on--"a new pedal setup," as he termed it, and I was surprised to hear subtle drones among (and sometimes intermixed with) crunched out noise sheets. While the material was only draft, what Taggart was exploring excited me, as I consider those two elements--harsh noise and drones--a rich mine to explore. In following conversation and CDR samples, Taggart consistently displayed endless enthusiasm for exploring new directions. Reinventing the paths of his gear is something he does with a passion; altering pedal arrangement, looping pedals into themselves (and consequently into part of a bigger chain, and in what part of the chain that loop goes), and original sound source are constantly being assessed. The fact that all his recordings are live improvisations also testifies to his well-developed intuitive sense of what does what and how it works into a piece.
