"Stefano Pilia is an Italian-based artist who reminds me most of the mighty Campbell Kneale AKA Birchville Cat Motel. These frozen drones unfold like a slow blooming flower during the first month of spring. These tracks are beautiful in a heartbreaking way. It's like watching the sunset for the final time, knowing that tomorrow will never come. On "This Deep Night Blanket Makes Us Melancholy" takes that singlular moment when the aforementioned realization happens and stretches it out over 10 minutes. This sounds like a person's life moving in slow motion; it's effect is dizzying. The two short tracks,"Healing Memories..." and "...Present Tension" are obviously complementary pieces. Both are guitar based, and both have a sense of hope in them. They are appropriately titled as it sounds like the soundtrack of your one final thread of optimism being pulled to its very limits. It hangs on for dear life, but on the latter track it finally lets go with little more than a whisper. Pilia shows he has a lot of range inside the drone field on this short album, and each of the four tracks is impressive. Every time I listen to "Healing Memories" again, I am constantly reminded of Birchville Cat Motel. This is a huge compliment as Campbell Kneale has produced some of the best music around over the last 10 years. If Stefano Pilia follows in Kneale's footsteps over the next 10, we are all in for something extraordinary."
