The very first instalment of My Cat Is An Alien's collaborative series of release fr A Silent Place, Cosmic Debris Vol. 1 features Text Of Light, who in this incarnation feature a line-up of Lee Ranaldo, Alan Licht, Tim Barnes, DJ Olive and Ulrich Krieger. The disc is portioned into two 'sides' (the original issue of this music was on vinyl), the first being an eighteen minute Text Of Light recording made at the Centre George Pompidou in Paris, the second a slightly longer My Cat Is An Alien improvisation, represented here in full with nothing taken out or added since its original performance. Sonically, these two pieces have much in common: both are meandering multi-instrumental free jams with elements of jazz and drone, but the Text Of Light side has to rank as the more involving of the two, documenting some great individual performances, all captured with the utmost clarity and cleverly mixed split channel dynamics. The MCIAA piece is slightly more heavy-handed in its use of effects, glooping together in a hypnotic, textured mush. Excellent.
