Bastiaan Maris' interest in machines, sound and violent chemical processes has led to an ongoing research in chemo-acoustic phenomena and the development of musical instruments based upon this principle. In 1993 after hour after four years of testing, this resulted in the creation of the Large Hot Pipe Organ. The LHPO consists of twenty pretuned pipes with a diameter of twenty six centimeters by detonating propane-air mixtures inside the pipes. To gain full control, a special computer was developed by George Homsey enabling direct keyboard manipulation. The LHPO is one in a series of chemo-acoustical and electromechanical instruments and installations. Among those are "The Heater", aka the didgereedoo from hell, "Relaytors de Luxe", an installation that explores electromechanical chaos to create rhythms and sound patterns, as well as steam rockets and other energy releasers.
