Title Description: With the release of this CD by Ex Mirror, we can proudly present the re-installation of one of the most obscure labels ever: God*Factory. Manufactured through Staalplaat, even we have no clue who is behind this label, and their is no address given. Below is a short list of forthcoming releases. Every CD is packed in a carton sleeve, this one with a special printing foil.
Actually, the name used to be Exterior Mirror. It was shortened for no meaningful reason... being tired of writing the whole thing out all the time. Exmirror is Claude Willey from Chicago. Others contribute from time to time. Dr. Dan Nichols is responsible for the building of insect recording devices, rotating microphones, transmitters used in live performance and other electronic gadgets. Other instruments and gizmos used on "Trans-Species Action" were: toy flutes, harmonicas, various electronic gadgets, synthesizers (Roland Juno 6, Prophet 600) samplers (Akai S950, Akai S612, various pedal samplers) Digitech and Boss digital delays, Lexicon Vortex, ART Multiverb 3, various distortion units, analogue tape, digital tape, contact microphones, large chunks of wood, SPACE PHONES, glasses, metal wire, and U.S. currency.
Most of the sounds used on "Trans-Species Action" where derived from insect recordings and automotive traffic pattern field recordings from Illinois and Delaware, which were recentely researched by Willey. The project was all about creating a dialogue with locusts, crickets, and katydids. He was trying to create a language using human patterns (i.e. the car) and train pulses created by the male insect. Willey studied the use of ultrsonic sounds created by the ant and the cabbage moth as well.
Recently Ex Mirror put together his research into a live performance were one performer had his head buried in an aquarium full of soil. They ran a signal thru his body and monitored his brain waves, using them in the audio collage with insect sound train-pulses. Automtive patterns from 5 Chicago locations were also used in the performance. The idea was to create an experimental 'psychic radio station' much like Tesla's in the 1800s. We tried to broadcast our communications to all receiving insects in the Midwestern United States, alive or dead. The title, "Trans-Species Action," was inspired by Suzi Gablik's book THE REENCHANTMENT OF ART. This groundbreaking book really took a shot at the 'self-important' art world and called for environmental compassion and healing. It really shook Willey up and made him look away from the 'self-absorbed' Chicago experimental music scene that had grown to be extremely pretentious.
Reading about solving environmental problems and our relationship with our surroundings (plant and animal) greatly influenced the entire CD. The recordings would not have been created without these new insights.
Previous Exterior Mirror Recordings include "HUPP" a full-length CD on KATYN records (sub label of Praxis Dr. Bearmann)
