VITAL WEEKLY #13 Week 39 Number 13 OPERATION: MINDWIPE -INSTRUMENTAL TRANSKOMMUNIKATION (CD by Furnace) Subtitled: The science of transforming the energy of the dead into an audible/visual image. ..not a rather joyful theme. File Under Industrial it says on the sticker. O:M is a solo project from Darryl Hell of Abstinence, whose two CD's on Furnace I didn't find of much interest. This CD with its 3 tracks is more interesting. Long stretched fields of layered noises and far away metal percussion is indeed quiet industrial stuff (and luckily not in the US sense of the word) .The 3 compositions do not go anywhere, they are rather there. To me it has a rather improvised character, but again: not bad at all. Here are two limited released 7"s in handmade packages. the one by White Noise is between two layers of cork with a strap of paper, the vinyl itself is white (obviously if you are on such a label) .The 'Ousia' is dark noisy, almost like a whole orchestra drowned in reverb. The 'Mystagogus' opens with a drone of a more lighter nature with guitars being played (in and out phase with itself) .The other 7" has a hand-painted cover with a fake hologram and is black vinyl. 'Physis' starts out with machine like rhythm (like something being played manually) with quite heavy guitars swirling in and out. Guitars play also a role on the other side 'Phyein' , but more in the, now already, renown, Maeror Tri drone style. Again two great 7"s. Watch out for Maeror Tri's 12 hour performance in Arnhem (The Netherlands) at the AVE festival! Address: White Noise - 19 Rue Colson - 21000 Dijon - France Address: Fool's Paradise -P.O. Box 6003- London W2 2WE - UK DELPHIUM/SHEEPHEAD (split 7" by Aquese Recordings) Another limited edition 7" on a small label that specializes in guitar oriented experimental music. Delphium has three tracks. 'Hymn' sounds like phased guitar drones, while 'Song For. ..' features also sampled sounds and is a bit orchestral (a bit overdone according to my taste) .'Swirl' , the final track on their side is like a sad song. Sheephead, a newcomer to this kind of music, has an 8 minute on going piece of tribalesque drums, and ethnic chanting (taped from radio's?) .In all its strangeness a good piece. Recently the 5 year old work 'A Hole Of Unknown Depth' was released, and this one just came before or after that one. As this is only PGR's home label, the cover tells us that 'A Hole' is probably lost. So 3 tracks from that CD are included here, but as far as I can tell in different mixes. The other 6 pieces are also old pieces, delved from the archives. Listening to this, I realized the importance of PGR once more: the band experimented with ambient sound in an industrial context, before the word ambient was being hyped by so many dance artists. One could say that through industrial music, ambient lived up until today and is now widely known (and meaningless) . Except for the lst track on this CD (which is a rather dull improvised piece), all other tracks show PGR's skill in treating sound in stretched out fields of layered ambient noise. A beautiful testament. Address: Silent@sirius.com DIGIDUB- 16 MILLIONS OF AN INCH (CD by Incoming!) On my favourite label of the moment a CD by a London collective of dub and soundsystem people, Digidub. The first track is a killer right away, with wicked violins playing. Most of the other tracks live up to the band name, so expect a lot of dub music. On the lOth track was quite disappointing, which is like a bad industrial imitation. For the rest: buy it now. Address: MEEUW (7" by Meeuw Muzak) A 'Meeuw' is a seagull in Dutch. Hailing from the Roman Catholic parts of Holland, this 7" deals with religion. Both sides have a drone of wacked churchorgan playing. The cover unfortunately in Dutch, deals also with religious themes (to built your own altar to play this record on). This is more conceptual fun. Address: Meeuw Muzak -Weth. van Caldenborghlaan 22- 6226 BT Maastricht -The Netherlands
