Staalplaat, founded in 1982 in Amsterdam is an sound artis (Staalplaat Soundsystem), a radio program, international sound artists forum and network and a label. Where most organisations measure their success in terms of sales or riding the crest of the latest trends, Staalplaat was created to discover the rough diamonds, to take risks and embrace all surprises. Staalplaat has a long tradition with artists collaborations, exchange and confrontations. In the eighties Staalplaat co-founded an audio art space called ,NL Centrum, in Amsterdam. Here Staalplaat organised installations and concerts . Later Staalplaat co-founded the Ambassade foundation that organised film, music, and machines performance festivals at different locations in Amsterdam. We participated in the Sonambiente-Festival (Berlin 1996), organized The Sound of Music that we did for Times Up at Ars Electronica (Linz 1998). This was a follow up on the Cocktail event in the Volksbühne Berlin and the Masterclass festival in Den Haag 1998 where we encouraged different artists to collaborate on different subjects.

Since its inception in 2000, Staalplaat Soundsystem has been producing sound art and performances that are usually installed or executed in non-museum spaces - industrial environment, urban public space, or nature: Station to Station with 10 trains for Todaysart in CS The Hague, Yokomono-Pro with 30 tuk-tuk taxis during the India Art Summit in New Dehli, and Composed Nature, a 'sound forest' designed with LOLA landscape architects consisting of 36 trees equipped with electric motors. 'Plastic Souls', composed of plastic waste. The instruments are played by the sea itself. The energy of the wave blows air through the flutes.
